Connecting Europe and Asia – Opportunities arising from the EU-Asia Connectivity Strategy

30. September 2020, Webinar

The European Union and Asia account for 70% of the global population and 60% of the world’s GDP. However, large parts of the potential between both regions remain untapped due to lacking physical and digital infrastructure. According to the Asian Development Bank, for the development of infrastructure and connectivity across Asia, investments of 1.7 trillion USD per year will be required until 2030, if the region is to maintain its growth momentum.

In September 2018, the EU launched its EU-Asia Connectivity Strategy. The goal of the strategy is to deepen the ties between Europe and Asia by enhancing transport, energy, digital, and human connectivity. The initiative is based on two principles: sustainability and the creation of a level playing field for businesses and infrastructure providers from all over the world. September last year, a high-profile conference took place and the EU concluded the connectivity partnership with Japan. One year later, amid the global Covid-19 pandemic and trade conflicts, reliable infrastructure, collaboration, and information flow are more important than ever.

A key to success of the EU initiative will be the mobilisation of private investments. What are the concrete plans to develop sustainable infrastructure between Europe and Asia? How can European and German companies, especially SMEs, benefit from the initiative? How can the creation of these new links support geopolitical stability and sustainable growth in such uncertain times?
